This website is operated by the The Board of Trustees for the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh ("RBGE") and The Botanics Trading Company Limited ("Botanics Trading"), a subsidiary of RBGE (together, "We"). We are committed to protecting the privacy of all of our users.

This Policy (together with our Terms & Conditions of Use and any other documents referred to on it) sets out the basis on which any personal data We collect from you, or that you provide to us, will be processed by us. For the purpose of the Data Protection Act 1998 (the "Act"), the data controllers are RBGE and BTC, both of 20A Inverleith Row, Edinburgh, EH3 5LR. Both RBGE (registration number Z5723674) and BTC (registration number Z1398094) are registered with the Information Commissioner. The Information Commissioner's Office regulates the processing of information relating to you and grants you various rights in respect of your personal data. Information we may collect from you

We may collect and process the following data about you:

  • Information that you provide by filling in forms on our site and the Celebrate Life micro site (together, "Our Site"), and by filling in the order form on the Celebrate Life leaflet. This includes information provided at the time of registering to use Our Site, subscribing to our service, posting material or requesting further services. We may also ask you for information when you enter a competition or promotion sponsored by RBGE and/or Botanics Trading, and when you report a problem with Our Site.
  • If you contact us, We may keep a record of that correspondence.
  • We may also ask you to complete surveys that We use for research purposes, although you do not have to respond to them.
  • Details of transactions you carry out through Our Site or by successfully submitting an order form from the Celebrate Life leaflet and of the fulfilment of your orders.

IP addresses and cookies

We may collect information about your computer, including where available your IP address, operating system and browser type, for system administration and to report aggregate information for our internal purposes and to our board of trustees, members and supporters. This is statistical data about our users' browsing actions and patterns, and does not identify any individual.

For the same reason, We may obtain information about your general internet usage by using a cookie file which is stored on the hard drive of your computer. Cookies contain information that is transferred to your computer's hard drive. They help us to improve Our Site and to deliver a better and more personalised service. They enable us:

  • To allow you to participate in interactive features of our service, when you choose to do so.

Unless there are exceptional circumstances We will only disclose your personal information to third parties, such as our credit card payment services provider, who need that information in order to process any request or order from you.

  • If RBGE and/or Botanics Trading or substantially all of its assets are acquired by a third party, in which case personal data held by it about its customers will be one of the transferred assets.
  • If We are under a duty to disclose or share your personal data in order to comply with any legal obligation, or in order to enforce or apply our Terms & Conditions of Use or terms and conditions of supply and other agreements; or to protect the rights, property or safety of RBGE and/or Botanics Trading, our customers, or others. You have the right to ask us not to process your personal data for marketing purposes. We will usually inform you (before collecting your data) if We intend to use your data for such purposes or if We intend to disclose your information to any third party for such purposes.
